I was looking at the aforementioned Shoe Calendar with all its wild and lovely shoes flipping by, and thought it would be neat to post some of my favourite pages. So here’s a catch-up post with the “best of so far.” The first up for January 5th – “Over-the-knee boots with Chinese-inspired embroidery, Yves Saint Laurent, 2004.” My crappy photograph really does not do these gorgeous boots justice. They are in fact much more leggy and slim, with striking colours and textures.

Next up, from January 12th, a too cute pair of red patent leather T-strap Mary Janes, by Andre Courreges, 1968. Love!

And I couldn’t leave out January 20th’s totally wild fork and wire stiletto by Sergio Alberto Astuto, 2004:

And I just love something about January 27th’s Paul Klee-inspired kidskin pump by Andrea Pfister, 1983. Maybe it’s the fun colours, the jutting shapes, or the fact that it reminds me of playing in my stepmum’s closet of old wild 80s accessories. The sensible heel doesn’t hurt either!

Dear Steve Madden:

Please stop pulling at my shoe-lusting heart strings with your swoon-worthy designs until you do a non-leather collection!

Seriously…I spent a whirlwind weekend in Manhattan last year, and encountered at least two pairs of absolutely knock-out fabulous Steve Maddens. One, a simple, elegant black patent pump. The other, a completely ridiculous, voluptuous black satin ankle boot. It was hard to tear myself away from such great designs, but I don’t buy leather unless it’s meets one of these two criteria:

1) it’s second hand (yay recycling!), since it’s important to keep stuff out of landfills; or

2) there is absolutely no alternative and there’s a functional need for the shoe (a super rare situation, and stilettos don’t fall into this category).

So, alas…until Steve gets on the veg/eco/fair trade shoes wagon, I’ll have to just keep making eyes at his gorgeous creations. *dreamy sigh*…
